About Girls Empowerment Sierra LeoneGirls Empowerment Sierra Leone (GESL) seeks to inspire, empower and enlighten young Sierra Leonean girls in secondary schools . GESSL was launched by two Sierra Leonean female leaders who felt that there wasn’t a space where young girls were being developed and nurtured as leaders to ultimately serve as leaders in the next generation who would change their communities.
As a founding body, we felt that the school systems were lacking a very important element in empowering young Sierra Leonean girls and out of this concern the need developed through various baseline studies, and GESSL was born in 2012. We partner with 5 schools in Sierra Leone and execute year-round workshops and programming for girls ages 12-17 who are vulnerable in the capital city Freetown to various things such as teenage pregnancy, abuse, dropping out of school and nurture them through the program.
