About Readers Inspired
Kushe-O, my name is Aminata and I am the author of the picture book, “The Biggest Little Brother.” Thank you for visiting Readers Inspired. I believe books have the power to inspire readers!

Growing up as a Sierra Leonean living in the United States, I had a difficult time reconciling the way Africa was represented in popular media and literature from my own experiences. Thankfully there has been a lot of progress in more authentic and diverse presentations of African identities, cultures, and stories in media and adult literature. However, in the #kidslit space, we still have a way to go.

I began this website for four reasons: 1) To highlight and celebrate children's books with dynamic African lead characters, 2) To discuss diversity and inclusion as it relates to children's picture books, 3) To share tips and suggestions for supporting diverse children's books and children's book authors, 4) To share insight into children's book authorship. Having access, from the youngest age, to books that can be windows and mirrors to the world enhances not only cultural competency but also engages readers.
