About Nina's Cookery Corner
My name is Nina Turay, from Freetown, Sierra Leone but now living in London, UK. I love to eat, cook and document my cooking by taking pictures and making videos. Food is much more than ingredients, it’s about, breaking social barriers and bringing people together in any social gathering. I love cooking with family and friends around. I started cooking at age 15. Some of my fond cooking memories while growing up in Freetown are going to the market on weekends and cooking for a household of 10. I remember sitting around the fire “fire si” listening to stories from my aunty and cousins whilst being in the kitchen watching my aunty make lunch/dinner for the entire household.

My cooking is influenced by my West African upbringing, as well as my exposure to different cultures and their foods. Some of my favourite cultural cuisines are Sierra Leonean – naturally, Nigerian and Italian. On some occasions, I get ideas from cookbooks or Internet food sites and infuse them with my West African style of cooking. I’ll be documenting and exploring West African traditional dishes mainly from Sierra Leone and neighbouring Guinea, Gambia, Nigeria, Ghana. Enjoy viewing! Aprons on!
